An effective communication between the employers or the managers and the employees is a primary element behind the efficienct working of an organisation. “There is considerable evidence to show that companies with effective communication strategies are successful, while those with poor internal communications tend to flounder.” (Preface, Book Title: Key Issues in Organizational Communication. Contributors: Dennis Tourish – editor, Owen Hargie – editor. Publisher: Routledge. Place of Publication: New York. Publication Year: 2004. Page Number: xii.) An employee works in an organisation as per the instructions of the managers. The employees can work well only when they understands clearly the instructions given by the managers. Effective communication between the managers and employees will thus help to increase the productivity, to minimize errors and to redress the employee grievances.

A better communication between the managers and employees are an essential requirement from the time when employees are selected in an organisation. The new employees have to be trained to perform the job on which they are placed. Communication is the tool with which a manager trains the employees to perform their job. When the employees are not properly trained, their performance will decrease causing inefficiency in the organizational functioning. The next requirement of better communication is to provide timely instructions for performing the job. Only when the employees understand the expectation of the company and the management from them, they can work properly to attain those milestones. In other words, an employee should be made aware of what his duty in the organisation is. He should be given proper instructions so that he works as per the requirement.

When an employee does not understand the instructions properly, he will make continuous errors that will cause inefficiency in the functioning of the organisation. “One of the hardest questions employees try to answer is why their manager does certain things.” (What motivates managers, Book Title: Breaking the Barrier to Upward Communication: Strategies and Skills for Employees, Managers, and HR Specialists. Contributors: Thad B. Green – author, Jay T. Knippen – author. Publisher: Quorum Books. Place of Publication: Westport, CT. Publication Year: 1999. Page Number: 17.) A manager can be a good leader only when his communication is effective. “A survey of vice presidents, presidents, and CEOs concluded that business communication courses were more important to their success than any other business courses, including finance and accounting.” (Importance of communication to leaders, Book Title: Applied Organizational Communication: Perspectives, Principles, and Pragmatics. Contributors: Thomas E. Harris – author. Publisher: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. Place of Publication: Hillsdale, NJ. Publication Year: 1993. Page Number: 3.)

Employee grievance occurs in every working organisation. It is the result of the employees’ dissatisfaction with the working condition, management policy, the work itself or other personal reasons. A better communication between employees and managers will help the managers to understand the problems of the employees. After knowing the grievances of the employees, the managers can take necessary remedial measures to resolve their problems. “Employee communication is directly linked with the success of an organization. Generally, effective employee communication is linked to productivity and morale of the employees.” (Essence of employee communication, Impact on performance, 2008) http://www.naukrihub.com/hr-today/employee-communication.html If the grievances of the employees are not resolved in time, it will lead to low employee morale and ultimately less productivity.

There are different methods to make the communication between the managers and the employees effective. First, the organisational structure should permit a two-way communication. In such a situation, the managers can give proper instructions and the employees feel free to seek clarifications to their queries. “Communication is the “lifeblood” of every organization. A vital means of attending to company concerns is through effective internal communication – downward, upward, and horizontal.” (Importance of effective communication, writing campus 2008) http://www.writingcampus.com/node/8464 If two-way communication is permitted, the employees can provide any valuable suggestions to the managers. This will help the managers to make improvement in the organisational functioning. An employee can freely communicate his grievances with the managers under a two-way communication setup. This will help to improve their motivation and morale and that will lead to more efficiency in the work.
