SunLink Health Systems, Inc. is an organization in the healthcare sector that provides facilities, services, and products and experienced and health professionals to offer quality, efficient medical care to people living in rural areas. At the moment it operates seven community hospitals and related nursing centers and home care businesses in the Southeast and Midwest. It is also running a pharmacy business, referred to as SunLink Scripts RX in Louisiana. Each SunLink facility is the only health care facility in its community. SunLink’s operating strategy is to link patients’ requirements with dedicated physicians and healthcare experts to deliver quality, effective medical care, and healthcare goods and services in each area it services (Healthcare companies, 2009).

To achieve its objectives, SunLink Health Systems, Inc has to ensure that its strategic plans operate as expected. Several factors are however a threat to the overall strategic plans of the organization and have to be addressed. The threats are classified as Environmental, Demography, Economic, and Government (Comerford, 2007).

Environmental threats

SunLink Health Systems, Inc is facing the threat of other private organizations offering healthcare facilities to rural communities or the citizens in general. The competition strains the budget of running SunLink Health Systems, Inc activities since they have to set the prices of their products and services at levels that match the competitors’. Operating in rural areas is also a threat to SunLink Health Systems, Inc’s activities. This is because many people believe that they can only get effective services and products from the urban areas Authenticity Consulting, (2007). The services offered by the organization are also disregarded by some populace who prefer the publicly-provided services. There is also a threat from non-profit hospitals seeking to take away some patients treated in the SunLink Health Systems, Inc facilities. This creates some form of competition which the organization must learn to handle (Sager, 2001).

Economic threats

There is an increase in the number of people with private health insurance and Medicaid implying that most of them do not have health insurance. The number of people lacking health insurance has risen to almost 45 million from a figure of around 23 million in the 1970s. This hinders the provision of health care services and products since most patients in rural communities cannot afford the services (Begun, Kaissi & Sweetland, 2005). Another threat is the rise in the cost of hospital care when compared to the local public tax revenue. This implies that the provision of health care facilities is increasingly becoming an expensive affair (Hover et al, 2003).

Government threats

The activities of SunLink Health Systems, Inc are always at risk when conservative local politicians dominate county governments. This is due to the resistance the leaders are bound to offer to changes in the health care sector. They will tend to endorse health care services offered by the government as opposed to the private ones. In cases where conservative local governments and local fiscal crises coincide, the activities of the organization are affected negatively (Sager, 2001).

Demographic threats

The rise of population in the rural communities is a threat to the running of SunLink Health Systems, Inc since most of them are unable to get health insurance. Some people are unable to afford the services offered by the organization (Sager, 2001).
