In modern society, the problem of persistent poverty among African Americans is a reason for several issues including health and food insecurities. While the younger generation finds themselves asking for the core reason of current low levels of income among African Americans, the primary reason lies within historical systematic obstacles that black people face in America. This essay will uncover the historical reasons for poverty among African Americans.

Throughout history, African Americans suffered a lot from structural racism and systematic inequality that created the wealth gap between white and black households. The structural racism in American society manifested mainly through the segregation process that separated the African American society and limited housing and educational opportunities for black people. It is a known fact that wealth attracts more wealth and that financial resources could be accumulated and increased through several family generations (Hanks et al., 2018). The segregation process pushed African American population into fewer employment opportunities like unstable jobs with low wages, which became the cause of limited savings opportunities. Thus, African Americans were unable to increase their funds through time, as it happened with white people. Even now, after multiple attempts to improve the situation, a young African American individual with good education and a secure job still lacks funds in comparison to his white counterparts.

In conclusion, this essay explored the problem of persistent poverty among African Americans. Due to historically systematic obstacles like the segregation process, black people had fewer opportunities than white people in education, job, and housing. The limitation of opportunities eventually resulted in the absence of significant family savings and funds, which comprise a vital part of wealth and offer more opportunities for new generations.
