The video takes sixteen minutes and it talks about the importance of cultural diversity. The film is a talk that was given by Michael Garvin who is a professor of human dimensions of natural resources. Garvin’s research examines the origin of human and biological diversity, which made him work with various communities in numerous countries. The clip was taken at a local TEDx event, it is produced independently and Michael Garvin is an associate. Michael Garvin begins by telling a story about David who was on the verge of death and by his death meant the disappearance of some language he alone knew. Garvin asked why there is a need to respect and keep our cultural diversity. He gave an example of the outbreak of malaria and a lot of people succumbed to it till quinine was discovered by the indigenous people of Peru. Malaria developed resistance to quinine until the chine herbalists developed another treatment. People could still be dying of malaria had it not been for the two communities, cultural diversity is vital because we get solutions to our daily problems from different minds.
The clip is educative and opens especially on why cultural diversity should be maintained. From the example of the development of the malaria remedy, it is clear that diversification helps have more ideas on how to solve a problem. Michael has opened our minds by reminding us that culture is not an object or something that can be taken or moved but culture belongs to people, it is dynamic and changing. Trying to balance society is the main reason why people are losing their culture and not because of interaction or communication with other communities. Finally, schools can adopt a culture to teach kids about their culture instead of dwelling in one culture.
